Zero-x is an American technology Company with a German R&D Partner MFC that focuses on sustainable waste conversion solutions.
The company was co-founded in 2018 by German entrepreneur Julien Uhlig and inventor Michael Hofmeister, with the aim of developing a technology that could convert any carbon-based waste stream into clean energy. Zero-x's first product, the X-series waste-to-energy system, can convert municipal solid waste, sewage sludge, and biomass into high-quality gases in a single-stage reactor. The technology is small enough to be installed anywhere and has been developed over 17 years, resulting in almost 200 gasifier systems commissioned globally working on wood pellets, before the team started focussing on real world waste.

Zero-x has received millions in German government grants and offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution to waste management, replacing polluting diesel generators in rural areas and reducing GHG emissions for concrete production. The X-series system offers four different sizes of the X-Series Machine, and the X-50 machine offers a nominal heat output of 120 KWh, a total efficiency of 86%, and an electrical efficiency of 25% with a genset and ofer 45% Using a Breakthrough Fuel-Cell developed by Fraunhofer Institute.. The X-50 system is a small-scale, modular, and affordable waste-to-energy technology that is scalable to meet the needs of local to industrial operations.
The technology is made in Germany for cost-effective solutions and has ultra-low emissions, with clean conversion without smoke and pollutants, and super quiet operation for residential operations. The X-50 system without enclosure has dimensions of 2.3 m x 2.0 m x 2.3 m, while the X-50 system with enclosure (plug & play solution) has dimensions of 6.058 m x 2.438 m x 2.896 m and a weight of approximately 6 tons. The X-Series technology can convert any waste stream on-site, eliminating landfills and waste transportation, and can replace polluting diesel generators for rural electrification. It can also generate cost-effective hydrogen for pipeline applications, fuel-cell power, or powering buses, and the carbon ash produced by the gasification process can be converted into durable bricks, storing carbon for generations and reducing GHG emissions for concrete production. The X-series reactor has three distinct zones: the drying zone, the gasification zone, and the combustion zone.

In a one-stage fixed bed gasification reactor with air coming from the top, there are typically three distinct zones:

The middle zone is where the actual gasification reactions take place, converting the dried feedstock into syngas. The high temperatures in this zone break down the complex hydrocarbons in the feedstock into simpler molecules such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and methane. The syngas produced in this zone contains most of the energy released during the gasification process.
The bottom zone is where the residual carbon in the syngas is burned to produce additional heat and carbon dioxide. The high temperatures in this zone ensure that any remaining tar and soot particles are completely oxidized, reducing emissions and improving the quality of the syngas produced.
